Il Ninfeo degli Annibaldi venne alla luce nel 1895, durante i lavori per la realizzazione dell’odierna via degli Annibaldi. Una fontana monumentale risalente presumibilmente all’epoca di Augusto, facente parte di una ricca Domus. Non sappiamo a chi appartenesse questa lussuosa residenza, sappiamo però che non molti anni dopo dalla sua costruzione, tra il 54 e il 68 d.C., venne distrutta per far posto alla Domus Aurea di Nerone. Ancora oggi è infatti ben visibile il muro della Domus neroniana che taglia questo sito archeologico di rara bellezza.
Si accede a questa dimensione sotterranea da una porticina metallica, posta nell’omonima via nei pressi del Colosseo, che attraverso una piccola scala a chiocciola conduce all’interno di un ambiente magico.
Dai Greci ai Romani, infatti, le Ninfe sono sempre state il simbolo del candore e della purezza ma anche figure cariche di mistero. Tanto che i Ninfei nascono come luoghi di culto per venerare queste creature mitologiche e in genere venivano posti in prossimità di fontane o di sorgenti d’acqua. Nella civiltà greco-romana con Ninfeo si indicava proprio un “luogo d’acque”, con la presenza di vasche e piante acquatiche presso il quale era possibile sostare, imbandire banchetti e trascorrere momenti di otium. Stessa funzione aveva anche nelle residenze, quelle più ricche e sfarzose: affacciava sul giardino ed era la zona destinata ai banchetti, ai ricevimenti importanti.
In origine il Ninfeo degli Annibaldi aveva forma semiellittica, con una vasca centrale e delle nicchie sormontate da medaglioni poste ad ornamento sulle pareti, quattro delle quali sono visibili ancora oggi. Tutta la facciata dell’abside è decorata con un mosaico ottenuto con conchiglie, smalto, pietra pomice e ghiaia. Un mix di materiali che dona al mosaico un aspetto piuttosto rustico ma non a caso scelto visto che i ninfei cercavano di riprodurre le grotte marine.
Questa costruzione, in opera reticolata, è databile tra la fine della Repubblica e l’età augustea, ma non si sa se appartenesse ad una struttura più grande o se fosse a sé stante, né tantomeno se fosse di carattere pubblico o privato. Come detto, infatti, i ninfei erano dei luoghi caratterizzati dalla presenza di fontane, costituiti da ambienti articolati, a volte anche suddivisi in navate ed utilizzati come luoghi di ritrovo e di festeggiamenti.
Nel 1986, a cura della Ripartizione X del Comune di Roma, è stata eseguita una complessiva opera di risanamento delle pareti per fermare lo stato di degrado in cui si trovano le decorazioni.
